New research has revealed that a shocking one in ten adults is now so obese their GP considers their weight a serious risk to their health with many of them living a highly unhealthy lifestyle.

Obesity rates in the UK have been rising over the last few years but have accelerated rapidly in more recent years proving that those living a harmful and destructive way of life shows no signs of slowing down.

Almost 2.8 million people in the UK are now classed as obese and are currently being treated for type 2 diabetes, a disease that has been strongly linked to an inactive lifestyle coupled with a highly unhealthy diet.

And being overweight doesn’t just put people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those who are severely obese are more likely to have heart attacks and high blood pressure as well as breathing difficulties.

However, these health problems can be significantly reduced when a substantial amount of weight is lost.

Bariatric surgeon Audun Sigurdsson from The Hospital Group said: “Gastric surgery is an extremely powerful treatment. It can dramatically improve high cholesterol, lipids in the blood, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea. If patients lose 30 per cent of extra weight they will correct these problems.”

Those who are worried about being overweight should book a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is the UK’s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Being overweight can put a serious strain on a person’s health. It can cause many serious problems such as type 2 diabetes and in some cases severe depression.

“Not only does being overweight have a huge impact on your health but it can also impact a person’s confidence and self esteem which can cause their social life to suffer too.

“At The Hospital group our consultants ensure that, as well as having an absolute need for a gastric procedure, the patient understands that weight loss surgery isn’t a miracle cure and they would need to work with the band to achieve the healthier lifestyle they desire.

“Bariatric surgery can change a person’s life for the better giving them back their health and also their confidence.”
